The Bulldog Barks
February 25, 2010
Principal Mr. Tush
Catholic Schools Week will begin on Sunday, January 31st. Please look for our students essays in the bulletin. Information about activities will be sent home this week.
Please check out the enclosed letter regarding a parent meeting on Tuesday, January 26th with Mrs. Linda Rechtin.
Have a great week!
Kindergarten Mrs. Denning
Our new letter this week is Yy- keyword- yarn. We will also be working with alphabetical order, rhyming, and we will add two new "pop-up" words to our list: you, like. Please continue to practice reading all "pop-up" words.
In math we will focus on dividing by sharing, writing simple number sentences, and we will be playing a card game to compare numbers through 10.
Have a great week.
Grade 1 Mrs. Hurst
In Phonics this week the students will be learning the sounds of combination or (as in fork), qu (as in quail) and digraph ch (as in cheese). Our new sight words this week are: there; love; shoe.
In Math the students are beginning to use rulers to draw line segments. We will soon be using our rulers to measure items to the nearest inch!
Grade 2 Mrs. Grove
Ms. Ehlers from the Purdue Co-Operative Extension Office is treating our class to a unit on nutrition. I am proud of how much the class already knows. Last Thursday she brought glowing soap and a black light so we could see what we miss when we wash our hands before eating. It was a big surprise to know we need to be more thorough when washing. We enjoyed her snack of carrot and celery sticks.
Grade 3 Mrs. Rector
The students are very interested in our unit on the Sun, Moon and Solar System. They have individual projects due next week. We are also working on group projects with the Eighth Grade class. Next week, we will have a Solar System Mini Lab to give the Eighth Grade and Third Grade partners a chance to demonstrate their work to the other classes. Parents are welcome to stop by also. Ill let you know a date and time soon.
This Wednesday, members of the Third Grade have parts in Mass. Please join us at 8:30 in church. Have a good week!
Grade 4 Mrs. Meyer
Last week we started a science experiment about germination. We are going to observe seeds for 10 days to see how many seeds sprout and how many do not. The amount of light, air, and water will affect the outcome. Students will be finishing up their novel for their literature circle group this week. We will be starting group projects next week. Students will have class time to complete this project.
Hopefully students have been working on their book report projects which replace AR tests for this quarter. At least one project needs to be complete by midterms. Those that have already presented have done a wonderful job. Students need to remember to stay focused this quarter and try their best on all homework and tests. I hope everyone has a great week!
Grade 5 Mrs. Baker
The 5th graders have been working hard this quarter so far and I am very proud of them! I hope they keep this up all quarter long! We will be having a religion test on Thursday of this week and will go over our study guides on Tuesday. Please make sure students study for this test.
We are really enjoying our novel, The Indian in the Cupboard. We will be starting a project on the book soon; more details will come home later this week. We will also have a quiz this week over what we have read so far.
Students should keep reading for AR! Our goal is for everyone to meet their AR goal this quarter. Hope you have a great week!
Grade 6 Mrs. Rice
The Olympics are coming! 6th grade will be hosting the St. Mary's Olympics during Catholic Schools Week. There will be an opening ceremony and events for all students to participate in.
A letter about the Pancake Breakfast was sent home over a week ago with 6th & 7th graders. The breakfast is Sunday, January 31. The breakfast will help pay for CYO Camp in May for the 6th and 7th graders, so it is important for all the families to help out.
Grade 7 Mrs. Powell
We are continuing to move forward from the few days off we have had. We will have a science test Thursday over Plant Processes in 7th grade. The 7th and 8th grades are reading short stories this week and working on writing activities to help strengthen their writing skills. We are continuing with adverbs and verb tenses in English, and both grades are doing a great job. All grades will have vocabulary this week.
Please remember to send in goods for the pancake breakfast on January 31. I know that some students have other obligations that day, but if you can work for just a short amount of time it will help. Thanks in advance for your support!
Have a great week!
Grade 8 Mrs. Birkholtz
As the weather has improved, we have been able to move ahead with our academics! The 8th graders have wrapped up space and are moving on to genetics in science. We have finished a project on the Trail of Tears and will have our chapter 11 test on Thursday in social studies. Seventh grade has moved from the continent of Africa to Southeast Asia, and the 6th grade will have their test over Mexico on Wednesday. In language arts we are continuing to write, do daily grams, and study adjectives. In reading we are beginning Rascal this week.
STO has put together our agenda for Catholic Schools Week. It will include raising money for the victims of Haiti as our service project for the week. We will also use part of our mission festival funds to help the victims of this terrible earthquake. Please keep this poor, devastated country in your prayers.
Mission Festival is Friday, February 12th and donations of gently used items for our raffle and prizes are greatly appreciated!
Check out the enclosed letter regarding a parent meeting on Tuesday, January 26th with Mrs. Linda Rechtin. We hope to see lots of parents there!
Art Mrs. Hetzer
The art classes are asking for any old, used greeting cards to recycle for an art project. There is a box in the cafeteria.
