The Bulldog Barks

February 1, 2010

Principal – Mr. Tush

School will not be in session this Monday, February 8th due to the Colt’s Super Bowl Appearance.  Win or lose, school will not be open by decree of Archbishop Buechlein.  Go Colts!           Happy Catholic School’s Week!

We have many special activities planned for this week.  With our themed dress days we celebrate the opportunity to express ourselves like Catholic Schools give us the opportunity to express our faith in a school setting.  God bless and keep our Catholic Schools.

On Monday, February 11th we will have our Reds Night information meeting at 7:00 p.m. in the Activity Center.

Athletic individual and team pictures will be on Saturday, February 27th at 9:00a.m. in the Activity Center.

Remember our Parish Mission, Monday, Feb. 1, Tuesday, Feb. 2, and Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 7:00 pm in church.  Hope to see many of our school parents in attendance.

Kindergarten – Mrs. Denning

We are looking forward to the special activities this week to celebrate Catholic Schools Week.  We are also looking forward to Olympic Day this Friday.  We will be representing the Philippines.

In phonics this week we will be focusing on new letter Dd- keyword-donut.  We will add 85 words to the caterpillar, giving us a total of 484 words!  We will also get 2 new "pop-up" words- do, put.

Due to the snow day last week, we will be celebrating our 100th day of school today.  We're anxious to see our marshmallow creations!  I hope your child lets you know how they all turned out.

Grade 1 – Mrs. Hurst

In Phonics this week we will learn combination ir (as in shirt) and combination ur (as in purse). Remember, all combinations are coded with an arc.  The students will also learn the soft (/s/) sounds of the letter C (as in circle) and digraph ow (as in bow).  Our sight words this week are: love; shoe; full; goes; pull; want; floor.

New book order will be going home this week.  They are due back to school by Friday, Feb. 12th.

Grade 2 – Mrs. Grove

We are excited to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. We made pictures to explain why St. Mary’s School is special. Donating a quarter for Haiti so we can dress up each day will be fun. We also can’t wait for the 6th grade Olympics on Friday. We are team Mexico. We get to go to a Solar System Mini Lab that the 3rd and 8th grade will be presenting, Wednesday.

Grade 3 – Mrs. Rector

Remember that the individual planet projects are due tomorrow.  The Third and Eighth Graders have really enjoyed working together on their Solar System lab projects.  They presented their experiments to each other this morning.  We would like to invite any parents or grandparents who would like to see the Solar System Mini Lab projects to come to the school cafeteria on Wednesday, February 3 anytime from 1:00 p.m. to 2:10 p.m.  We hope to see you there!

We will be exchanging Valentines and doing a special craft in class on Friday, February 12th.  We will not have a party in the afternoon as originally planned because that is the afternoon of the Mission Festival.

Grade 4 – Mrs. Meyer

Fourth grade is excited about Catholic Schools Week!  If students dress up this week, they need to donate at least a quarter for Haiti.  For the Olympics taking place on Friday, we are team Ireland.  We will make a flag and banner to present at the Opening Ceremony.

Students will begin their literature circle group project this week- creating a game board for their book!  They will not be expected to do any work at home. Students will need to bring in supplies from home though. The projects will be completed by Friday.  Just as a reminder: One book report project is due by midterms.  This would be a good week to work on the projects at home.

I hope you can join us for mass on Wednesday.  Fourth graders will be participating this week.

Grade 5 – Mrs. Baker

The 5th graders are very excited to begin Catholic Schools Week!  We are team Germany in our Winter Olympics.  We will start making our flag today!  Please remember that if a student decides to dress up during this week, they need to have a quarter for each day, and all the money will go to help the people in Haiti!

We have been working hard on our Indian in the Cupboard projects.  Each student and their partner are working on building a longhouse like the one Little Bear once lived in.  We have researched information on longhouses and have found a lot of neat facts.

We will have a Science test this Wednesday.  Study guides will go home today, and we will review in class tomorrow.  Please remind students to keep reading for AR, they need to be halfway by midterm.  Have a great week!

Grade 6 – Mrs. Rice

The opening ceremony for the St. Mary’s Olympics is on Thursday, 8:30-8:45.  The countries (classes) will parade into the activity center, and the Olympic torch will be lit to let the games begin.  The events will take place on Friday morning and are being conducted by the 6th grade class.  Good luck to all.  There are pictures from the St. Mary’s 2002 Olympics upstairs in the hall.  The results from the St. Mary’s 2002 and 2006 Olympics are in the hall as well.

The 6th graders are studying cells and have been using microscopes to look at cells.  They had a math test last Friday.  The 7th and 8th graders will have math tests this Thursday.

Grade 7 – Mrs. Powell

I would first like to give a huge thank you to Chris and Tina Waldon for organizing the pancake breakfast!  I greatly appreciate all of the parent help and support!  Also, we are starting the candy gram sales today.  The candy grams will cost 50 cents and all profits will benefit the students for CYO Camp.  I will let you know what the profits were from the breakfast and candy gram sales at a later date.

This week all students will have a vocabulary review over units 6-10.  We are continuing to work on writing activities in the 7th and 8th grades.  We will start a new chapter in science this week over respiration and excretion.

Please remember that this week is Catholic Schools Week. The students must pay 25 cents to be out of uniform each day, and any additional money will be used for donations to Haiti.

Have a great week!

Grade 8 – Mrs. Birkholtz

Catholic Schools Week has begun, and the students have written essays, are participating in out of uniform days, taking part in some awesome Olympic activities, and raising money for Haiti.  In the midst of all of the fun, our Catholic education remains the focal point!

The 3rd and 8th grades are holding a mini science lab on Wednesday in the cafeteria.  They have worked together to create some very interesting science experiments.  It has been great watching them work together, and we appreciate Mrs. Rector inviting us to join her students in this science activity!

Mission Festival is next Friday!  The 8th grade is excited to put on the festival to raise money for various missions.  We have begun selling raffles this week, and their cost is a quarter each or five for a dollar.

The parent meeting with Mrs. Rechtin for grades 5 – 8 has been rescheduled for Monday, February 11 at 7:00 PM. in the Activity Center.

BoxTops – Cathy Hill

Kudos to Mrs. Baker and her 5th graders for being the Dec/Jan BoxTop winners. They turned in 6 baggies = $30.00.

The end of February is the deadline for the second and final submission of BoxTop coupons, for the 2009/2010 school year. All coupons turned in after February 28th, will count towards the '10/'11 school year. Please send in all coupons you may have lying around. We are a couple of hundred dollars away from reaching our goal of $1000.00. The money raised will be used to replace as many chalkboards as possible.

Thank you for supporting your school.

8th Grade Rummage Sale

Art - Mrs. Beinkemper

The Cincinnati Arts Association is hosting it's annual student art show at the Aronoff Center downtown. There is no entry fee and there are no prizes, however, St. Mary School is guaranteed 8 entries in the show. This is an opportunity for any Kindergarten through 8th grade student to have your art displayed at the Aronoff Center from April 17 through May 2nd with a preview reception on April 16th.

I will be happy to gather entries and take them and pick them up. If I receive more than 8, I will have a judging panel choose 8 as that is our limit. Please let me know if you are interested because there are some criteria such as theme, size and presentation. You can call me at 926-1606, or email margebein@gmail.com.

Entries will have to be given to me no later than Tuesday, March 23, 2010!
