The Bulldog Barks
April 5, 2010
Principal – Mr. Tush
Another fish fry season has come to an end. I really didn’t think that we could break our record numbers from last year, but it looks like we did. I will get more information to you as soon as we confirm our totals. Thank you for all of your support, and thank you Ann Hutchinson for organizing such a successful fund raiser.
Please join me in thanking the City of Aurora Grant Program administered by the Dearborn Community Foundation, Inc. for granting St. Mary's School $2000.00. This money will be combined with our Box Top money to purchase a white board for each classroom. Thanks to Cathy Hill for preparing this grant request.
We have a busy week ahead. Our book fair will be in the Activity Center all week; Grandparents’ Day is this Friday from 1:30-2:30 p.m. (please remember to send in a note so we can plan for attendance and know if your child will be going home with a grandparent); and Celebrate St. Mary’s will be this Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. I look forward to seeing you for a wonderful night of music, dancing, and fun while celebrating the joys and successes of St. Mary School, a ministry of St. Mary Parish.
Have a great week!
Kindergarten – Mrs. Denning
We extend our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Denning and her family on the loss of her brother.

Our sight words this week were: sure; earth; other; climb; door. We will be having a sight word test next Friday. A list of the words on the test will go home this week.
Grade 2 – Mrs. Grove
We started a unit on weather outside on the church steps Thursday. It was so beautiful out!
Please remember to help your 2nd grader bring in 3 family photos (including a baby photo) for our new bulletin board.
It is time to send in the Holy Childhood mission boxes now that Lent is over.
Don’t forget the First Communion Retreat is coming up on Sat., April 24. We’ll need a few rolling pins. If you have one, would you please bring it with you to the retreat?
Grade 3 – Mrs. Rector
I hope everyone had a blessed Easter and enjoyed their time off over spring break. It’s hard to concentrate when the weather outside has been so nice, but we have a long way to go to finish the school year. Report cards for the third quarter will be sent home on Wednesday. Please sign and return. Let me know if you would like to meet to discuss any questions or concerns.
The students are excited about the book fair this week. We will go on Tuesday and Wednesday as a class. They will have the opportunity to go during lunch recess and after school all week. Thank you for helping our school earn books!
We are looking forward to Grandparents’ Day on Friday afternoon. Please let me know if a grandparent plans to attend. Also, send a note if your child is going home with their grandparent. We also have our trip to Ag Day at the fairgrounds on April 20th. Permission slips are due on Friday.
Grade 4 – Mrs. Meyer
Fourth quarter begins today, which means students are now responsible for reading and completing four book report projects. Two projects will be due before midterms. Third quarter report cards will go home on Wednesday. Please sign and return them as soon as you can. Students have been working hard on their research paper. They have finished researching their topic and are ready to learn how to write a bibliography. By the end of the week, students should have their rough draft complete. We will then edit and revise, and finally we will type our final draft. I am really looking forward to the publishing step!
Don’t forget that Grandparents’ Day is this Friday, April 9 from 1:30-2:30. I hope to meet many of the students’ grandparents! Students will also be visiting the book fair on Tuesday and Wednesday during school.
Grade 5 – Mrs. Baker
The 4th quarter has now begun! We will be working on AR projects this quarter instead of points. Each child is responsible for 4 AR projects this quarter. All of the information about AR for this quarter went home with your child today. Please read this material and if you or your child have any questions please let me know!
Report cards will go home on Wednesday. Please sign and return these as soon as possible. All of this beautiful weather is making it hard for students to concentrate. We still have one quarter to go! Let’s make it a successful one!
We will be having a science test on Wednesday of this week. The study guide for the test went home today, and we will review in class tomorrow. Please help your child to study for this test! A big thanks to Max and Nick for bringing in reflecting telescopes for us to look at! It was neat to see a real one instead of just a picture! Have a wonderful week!
Grade 6 – Mrs. Rice
CYO permission slips were due last Friday. The money is due by April 23. Orders for Red’s tickets are due by April 16. The students sound great already!
Report cards are issued this Wednesday. Please sign and return ASAP. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Have a great week!
Grade 8 – Mrs. Birkholtz
We hope everyone had a great spring break! The students are back into the regular classroom routine and are working hard. 8th grade is working on the periodic table in science, and they are roaming westward in social studies. Seventh grade had a test over Asia last week and are traveling to China this week. Sixth grade has finished Rascal and will watch the movie this week. We are also continuing to work with adverbs in English. The 6th graders are wrapping up Central America this week with a test on Wednesday.
Grades 5 through 8 are practicing their singing skills with Mrs. Rechtin to prepare for the singing of the National Anthem at the Reds game on May 24th. Let’s be sure and support them at the game!
The Mission Festival will be next Friday, April 16th, and we invite everyone to join in the fun! Raffle tickets are being sold daily. The cost is 25 cents each or five for a dollar.

Amos/Hosea/Micah: A Call to Justice
Six Weeks with the Bible
These prophets express with certainty what God thinks about oppression, injustice, and neglect of the poor. The direct language of these prophets can get our attention in a way that few other things can. This study is a call for each of us to return to the ways of the Lord. It will begin Wednesday, April 21st from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the parish office. We hope to “travel with the prophets” by meeting for the remaining sessions in participant’s homes. Our guide is a booklet by Loyola Press and Scripture. Please call Carolyn Meyer to register, 926-0060.
BoxTops - Cathy Hill
Kudos to Mrs. Birkholtz and her 8th graders for being the March BoxTop winners. They turned in 3 baggies = $15.00. We are now in
our final countdown for this BoxTop fundraiser. I will meet my buddies mid-May (in 6 weeks) to collect all baggies and to determine which grade has turned in the most BoxTops this school year. The winning grade will be treated to a pizza party. Please continue to turn coupons in. The student(s) who turned in the most coupons, will be rewarded at the awards ceremony.
We are still awaiting a check from General Mills for the Feb. submission. As soon as we receive it, we will know if my goal of $1000.00 was reached.
Thanks to all who participated.
Market Day
Market Day pick-up is Tuesday, March 16th from 4:30 – 5:30 pm.
