The Bulldog Barks

April 12, 2010

Principal – Mr. Tush

Thank you for a great evening at Celebrate St. Mary’s.  We had a record attendance.  Please join me in thanking Marge Beinkemper, Ann Hutchinson, Chris Kent, and everyone who donated for making Celebrate St. Mary’s such a success.  I will let you know about raffle ticket sales and all of our prizes as soon as we get it sorted out.

Thank you to all of our grandparents for showing up last Friday.  I hope you enjoyed your stay.

            Have a great week!

Kindergarten – Mrs. Denning

This week in phonics we will be working with digraph ck (lock).  A digraph is two letters that come together to make one sound. Digraph ck always follows a short vowel. When you hear a short vowel followed by the k sound, it will be spelled 'ck'.

After adding all of our words for the 26 letters of the alphabet, our caterpillar ended up with 551 words!

We will be adding the words- look, see to our list of "pop-up" words.

The children did a very good job on their report cards.  I am proud of all of them.  If you haven't already done so, please remember to sign and return the cards.

The Mission Festival is this Friday afternoon.  It will be a fun time.  The children will need to bring money to take part in the activities.

            Have a great week!

Grade 1 – Mrs. Hurst

The 1st graders and I would like to thank everyone who purchased books from the Book Fair and donated them to our room.  We love all our new stories!

In phonics this week we will learn digraph ey (as in key) and the syllable division pattern vc/v.  Our sight word this week is “strange”.

In math we are identifying and drawing congruent shapes.  We are also continuing to use our rulers to measure line segments to the nearest inch.

Grade 2 – Mrs. Grove

We loved performing two plays for our grandparents.  Guessing the owners of the baby pictures was fun, too.

Ask your 2nd grader to show you the cool trick for subtracting 9.

Thanks to Mrs. Rector, Mrs. Stegemiller and all the helpful parents for the wonderful Book Fair.

Grade 3 – Mrs. Rector

It was nice to see so many grandparents on Friday!  I think they enjoyed their time in third grade and maybe even picked up a little Spanish.  I know we certainly enjoyed having them.

We received another letter from our RSVP pen pals last week.  We will write back this week and begin making plans for their visit in May.

The third graders are participating at Mass this Wednesday.  Please join us if you can!

Grade 4 – Mrs. Meyer

It was great to see all of the grandparents at school on Friday! The students really enjoyed the book fair last week too.  Now they have new material to read for their book report projects!  Thank you, Mrs. Rector and Mrs. Stegemiller, for organizing the book fair. Thank you to all the parents who helped as well.

Students will begin writing their research paper rough draft on Monday in class.  The rough draft needs to be complete by Thursday so we can begin the editing and revising stage of the writing process.  The Mission Festival has been rescheduled for this Friday, April 16.

Grade 5 – Mrs. Baker

Thank you to everyone who came to visit on Grandparents Day!  It was neat to meet so many nice people!

The social studies test was rescheduled to this Tuesday.  We finished reviewing in class on Friday, so students had the whole weekend and Monday to study.  We will be finishing up our religion chapter this week, so a test will be coming up the beginning of next week.  We will also start working on how to pray the rosary during religion for the next couple of weeks.  Please send in a rosary for your child to use and keep here at school for awhile.

We really enjoyed our time at the Book Fair!  Thank you to Mrs. Rector, Mrs. Stegemiller, and everyone else who made this possible!  Also, thank you to all that donated a book for our class.  We have many new reading materials to choose from!

Grade 6 – Mrs. Rice

The order for Red’s tickets is due by this Friday, April 16!  Payment for CYO camp is due by Friday, April 23.

I will be writing in students’ assignment books when they have incomplete work, work that is late, or poor scores on work.  They are to show you and ask you to sign their assignment book each day.  I write in their assignment book so you are informed of their effort and progress.

Congratulations to Jenny Packard for having her yearbook cover entry selected to be the cover for the St. Mary’s yearbook 2009-2010.  She earns a free yearbook.  Adam Rector receives $5.00 off his yearbook order for placing second.  Thank you for the picture files that have been sent in.  I still need pictures of girls’ basketball and volleyball.  It is not too late to place an ad in the yearbook.  Contact me if you have questions or information.  Yearbook order forms will be sent home in May.  The price will be $15.00

Grade 7 – Mrs. Powell

We are struggling to concentrate again with the warm weather.  We have a lot of school left and students need to try their best to stay focused.  There will not be vocabulary this week.  The 6th grade will do spelling, the 7th grade will start a brief unit on the short story; and the 8th will work with poetry.  In English, 7th is working with adverbs and the 8th is working with nouns.  The 8th grade has a project due next week for the novel Tex.  In science, the 7th grade is working with earthquakes and volcanoes.

Please remember CYO money is due by April 23, and Reds tickets are due April 16.  The Mission Festival is Friday from 12:30-2:00.

Grade 8 – Mrs. Birkholtz

Warm weather has certainly impacted the students’ concentration skills!  They need to remain focused as there is quite a bit of the school year left that will cover a lot of educational material.  The 8th graders are continuing to learn about the elements and periodic table in science.  In social studies we are wrapping up the westward movement and will have a test next Tuesday.  7th graders are studying about China and will be receiving a project on China today.  6th graders are beginning their study of South America.  In language arts, the 6th graders have their test over Rascal this week and are continuing with pronouns in English.  Their Main Street Aurora essays are due on Friday.

Final payment for the class trip is Wednesday, April 21st.  Many parents and students have already paid, and I greatly appreciate it!  Also, ticket orders for the Reds game are due on Friday.  Let’s have a great turnout for the game!  The students are working hard and deserve our support!

The Mission Festival is Friday from 12:30 to 2:00!  Please join us for an afternoon of fun and games!

Mission Boxes

It's time to return those Lenten coin boxes! We will send all the money to the Holy Childhood Association.

Thank you for your generosity.

Book Fair

Thanks to everyone for making the book fair a huge success!  We were able to get many new books for our school library and classrooms.  A special thanks to all the parent and teacher volunteers who helped set up and run the book fair.  We couldn’t have done it without you!

Amos/Hosea/Micah: A Call to Justice

Six Weeks with the Bible

These prophets express with certainty what God thinks about oppression, injustice, and neglect of the poor. The direct language of these prophets can get our attention in a way that few other things can. This study is a call for each of us to return to the ways of the Lord. It will begin Wednesday, April 21st from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the parish office. We hope to “travel with the prophets” by meeting for the remaining sessions in participant’s homes. Our guide is a booklet by Loyola Press and Scripture. Please call Carolyn Meyer to register, 926-0060.
