The Bulldog Barks
April 12, 2010
Principal – Mr. Tush
We have one more week to sell at least 400 Reds tickets. Tickets are due this Friday, April 23rd. We have not held a social event this large since I have been at St. Mary’s, (at least 2 years) and I hope this can be our first. Everyone is invited! Parents of singers, please remember that if your child is singing you must attend. St. Mary's School will not be providing transportation home. After the National Anthem students will be released to their parents. If you cannot attend, please make arrangements with another adult and send a note to school informing us who we may release your child to.
Please join us this Friday evening, April 23rd, for put-put golf and a reptile show in the Activity Center. Put-put will open at 6:00 p.m. with the reptile show beginning at 7:00 p.m. There is no charge but you will have the opportunity to make a free will donation. If anyone has a putter that they could let us borrow for a week, please send it to school with your child on Monday. If your child rides the bus, please bring it in yourself. I have three, but we could use nine or more.
On April 28th we will be holding an open house from 6-7 p.m. This will be an opportunity for new students to visit our school and our current students to visit the classroom that they will be in next year. Please spread the word to potential new families.
Kindergarten – Mrs. Denning
We will be learning a new digraph in phonics this week- sh- keyword-shark. We will also continue focusing on long vowels.
In math we will be working with subtraction (take away) story problems, and the class will be bringing home self-checking flashcards for learning to read number words, one-ten.
Earth Day is this Thursday and we will be talking a lot about the 3 R's- reduce, reuse, recycle. We will also plant seeds to grow flowers. I hope there are some "green thumbs" in the kindergarten room!
Grade 1 – Mrs. Hurst
In phonics this week we will learn the sound of digraph ph (as in phone) and the soft sound of the letter g (as in giraffe).
The first graders are going to begin to explore space in science this week. We mainly will be focusing on the Earth, Sun and Moon.
Grade 2 – Mrs. Grove
We still have the boy’s navy blue suit, size 10, if anyone would like to have it for their First Communion.
Thank you so much to the 7th and 8th grade for the fabulous Mission festival. We loved it!
Crystal Clear’s presentation about recycling was really cool, too. We learned that you can’t recycle #1 or #2 plastic if it is not a bottle. That means no margarine containers!
Grade 3 – Mrs. Rector
Our field trip to Ag Day is tomorrow. Don’t forget that students may be out of uniform, but dress appropriately for the weather. Bring lunch and a drink- we will be gone all day. We will leave St. Mary’s at 8:30 and return at 2:15.
We will begin working with Lisa Kramer from Cincinnati, Inc. this week for the Jr. Achievement program. We are looking forward to learning about businesses and the economy from her. She will be here this week on Wednesday and then continue on the next four Tuesday afternoons.
Grade 4 – Mrs. Meyer
Students had a great time at the Mission Festival last Friday. Thanks to all those who planned it! We have a busy week this week. In math students will be learning about tessellations, sales tax, and decimal numbers in the thousandths. They will have a test on Friday.
We will also finish up our Indiana History chapter about how and when Indiana became a state. If you didn’t know, Indiana became the nineteenth state in 1816. Students should be able to tell you the exact date. The Indiana History test will be Thursday. Students will get a study guide Monday.
Students will also be finishing up their literature circle book this week and will be tested over their book on Friday. I know some groups can’t wait to see how their book ends!
Grade 5 – Mrs. Baker
The 5th graders have presented some excellent AR projects so far. The first project needs to be turned in by midterm which is May 4th. Keep reading and creating some neat projects!
We are busy in our literature circle groups. Many students were surprised by how much they like their books after they started reading them! Each student needs to make sure they have completed the required reading for each day, so that their group can complete all tasks needed here at school.
A big thank you to the 8th grade for another great Mission Festival! We had a great time! Have a wonderful week!
Grade 6 – Mrs. Rice
The 6th graders have a math test on Tuesday, 7th graders have a math test on Thursday, and 8th grade has a math test on Wednesday. The 6th & 7th graders will have a practice test to study before the test. The 2nd part of ISTEP is next week. Get plenty of rest and stay nourished.
CYO fees are due by Friday, April 23. Please check students’ assignment books for notes about progress.
Grade 7 – Mrs. Powell
Thank you for your support of the Mission Festival. This Thursday is Earth Day; try to do something great for our Earth!
This week all grades will have vocabulary. In science, we are studying volcanoes and will have a project assigned. In 7th grade reading, we are reading the short story “Sleepy Hollow” ,and in 8th grade they are working with poetry. We are working with adverbs in 7th grade and nouns in 8th grade.
Please remember to turn in money for CYO Camp, if not already turned in. The trip to CYO Camp is May 10th and 11th, please mark your calendars.
Grade 8 – Mrs. Birkholtz
The students have begun the countdown for the class trip! They are getting very excited, but they need to remain focused on their academics and doing quality work. We are getting ready to begin quizzes over the periodic table in science. In social studies, the 8th grade is studying the background of the economic systems of the North and South before the Civil War. The 7th graders are working on their China project and wrapping up the chapter on China, and the 6th graders are studying South America.
In language arts, the 6th graders finished Rascal and watched the movie today. We are studying the different types of pronouns in English and finalizing the essays for the Main Street Aurora contest.
Thanks to everyone who donated to the Mission Festival! It was a great success. Without the support of the students, parents, and parishioners, we would not be able to help other missions!
Art - Mrs. Beinkemper
The
4th through seventh grades are studying Claude Monet and Impressionism in art
class. We would like to paint En Plein Aire (outside) at the river on Tuesday
April 27th (weather permitting). I am looking for a parent who would be willing
to walk with each class to and from school while I stay at the river cleaning /
setting up. Please give me a call 926-1606 or email me margebein@gmail.com if you can help. Thanks!
Mission Boxes
Please return your Holy Childhood Mission boxes to school now.
Book Fair
Thank you again to all who volunteered at the book fair. Thanks to all the shoppers as well! We earned around $1400 in new books for our school. We couldn’t have done it without you!
FIRST COMMUNION UPDATE
The required meeting/retreat morning for first communicants and parents is Saturday, April 24 at 10:00 a.m. in the school cafeteria. Details about this and the Mass registration forms will be sent home next week. First Communion weekend is celebrated May 1-2 during all of the Masses. Pictures will again be taken between the two Masses on Sunday and you will receive order forms for this if you are interested.
St. Mary’s Night at the Reds – May 24th
The deadline for ticket sales has been extended until Friday, April 23. As of Friday, April 16th we have sold 218 tickets. We must sell 400 tickets to be able to participate in this event.
Amos/Hosea/Micah: A Call to Justice
Six Weeks with the Bible
These prophets express with certainty what God thinks about oppression, injustice, and neglect of the poor. The direct language of these prophets can get our attention in a way that few other things can. This study is a call for each of us to return to the ways of the Lord. It will begin Wednesday, April 21st from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the parish office. We hope to “travel with the prophets” by meeting for the remaining sessions in participant’s homes. Our guide is a booklet by Loyola Press and Scripture. Please call Carolyn Meyer to register, 926-0060.
