The Bulldog Barks
April 26, 2010
Principal Mr. Tush
We had a great time at the Snakes Alive reptile show presented by Rick Teepen. Please join me in thanking the Lischkge family for donating the presentation, and Robert Smith for obtaining the put-put golf course donated by Duke Energy.
ISTEP+ is this week. Please make sure our students get an adequate amount of sleep for their best performance.
This is a last call for all Reds tickets. Please send in any remaining ticket orders tomorrow. Thank you for supporting this unique opportunity for our 5th 8th graders. Please remember that all students need a ticket and a ride home. Singing students will only be provided with the bus ride to the event so that they can arrive in the V.I.P. area together. If you cannot make the event, please send in a note telling us who to release your child to after they finish singing.
This Wednesday evening, April 28th, St. Mary's School will be hosting an Open House from 6-7:00 p.m. This will be an opportunity for new students to visit our school and our current students to visit the classroom that they will be in next year. Please spread the word to potential new families.
Have a great week!
Kindergarten Mrs. Denning
In phonics we'll be learning a new digraph this week, th(voiced th-the letter sound makes your vocal chords vibrate or move)-keyword-feather. We have added two new "pop-up" words to our list: come, and are. We will be doing a lot of sentence reading using number words and color words. Please practice these words with your child. Some of the words are quite tricky and need to be read by sight, not blending.
In math we are continuing our work with subtraction and addition, and we will be reviewing a measuring unit using rulers and non-standard items.
On Wednesday, 4/28, we will have our ice cream party for the class book that was written for the Young Authors contest. Thank you to Julie Alley and Kim Rector for doing this project with the class.
Grade 1 Mrs. Hurst
In Phonics this week we will be using the dropping/doubling rules while adding suffixes to a word. We will also learn "ghost letter" digraphs kn (as in knot), gn (as in gnat), and wr (as in wreath). Our sight words this week are: guess; heart. Parents, don't forget to listen to your child read each word on his/her Phonics homework!
Grade 2 Mrs. Grove
Last Thursday was an eventful day. We started by singing Happy Birthday to Mr. Vincent for his 60th birthday. Then we did a science experiment. We tasted different foods wearing a blindfold and holding our nose. It was very difficult to distinguish between the foods even though we knew the 3 foods we tasted. Later we wore plastic gloves and went outside to clean up all around the school property for Earth Day.
This week we will be taking an achievement test all week. We wont have any homework or even a Spelling test. Please send in #2 pencils.
Grade 3 Mrs. Rector
We will begin the second round if ISTEP tests tomorrow. Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest and has a snack to eat at break. We will not have a spelling list this week because of the testing.
Students need to have one book project turned in before progress reports come home next week. They received all the information they needed to complete this project two weeks ago. They need to check with me if they have any questions about the assignment.
Looking ahead, we will host our pen pals for a picnic in the Activity Center on Thursday, May 20th. I would like to have a few parents come in that day to help out. It would also be nice to have a few desserts to share. Please let me know if you are interested in helping out.
Grade 4 Mrs. Meyer
As I am sure you already know, ISTEP will be taking place this week. Fourth graders will be taking all multiple choice tests in math, English/LA, and science. We will test Tuesday through Thursday. Please be sure students get plenty of sleep and eat a good breakfast. I want them to do great on their last 4th grade ISTEP! Students also need to be sure they have at least two #2 pencils. Because of ISTEP students will not have any other tests or homework this week. They do have a couple of projects to work on that are due at later dates. This would also be a great week to work on book report projects. Two projects are due by midterm which is Tuesday, May 4.
Grade 5 Mrs. Baker
We will begin ISTEP testing tomorrow. The 5th grade will be testing Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We will take breaks and have time for a snack each day. Please make sure students get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast. This is the last ISTEP for this year!
Midterm is May 4th. One AR project needs to be turned in by midterm. Several students have already turned in 3 projects! Way to go! ISTEP week is a good week to be working on these projects since we will not have any other tests and very little homework.
We are learning how to say the Rosary in religion. The students are very excited about this. If you let us borrow some of your extra rosaries, thank you so much.
Hope you have a wonderful week!
Grade 6 Mrs. Rice
The 6th grade will be ISTEP testing From Tuesday -Thursday. Young Author participants will be treated to an ice cream party Wed. afternoon. CYO camp is in just 2 weeks, May 10 & 11. More info will be sent home soon regarding packing, departure, etc.
The 8th grade is almost ready to start reviewing and studying for the ECA (Core 40) Test for Algebra. The test will be on Wed. and Thurs., May 26 and 27.
They have been given a user name and password for: www.doe.state.in.us/highachiever/student, a website for algebra ECA review for testing. Our test will be the paper form of the test. The textbook also has a great website. I will be giving them review assignments in class and for home.
Grade 7 Mrs. Powell
We will have the last section of ISTEP testing this week; the students will be doing multiple choice. Please make sure your child is getting plenty of rest and is prepared to do their best. We will have a light load due to testing. There will not be any vocabulary this week. The 7th grade will have time to work on their volcano projects and will wrap-up short stories. The 8th graders will work on poetry projects this week.
Please turn in CYO Camp money ASAP if you have not already done so.
Grade 8 Mrs. Birkholtz
ISTEP testing begins tomorrow. Please make sure your student is getting plenty of rest and a good breakfast. The 8th graders are working on a project for social studies and continuing to study the periodic table with quizzes over the periods. 7th graders are working on their China projects, and the 6th grade is wrapping up their unit on South America. In language arts, the 6th graders are reading from the reader again, and they are studying pronouns. Their Main Street Aurora essays have been sent in, and the students did a good job with them.
There will be a parent meeting for class trip chaperones on Monday, May 3rd at 5:15 p.m. in the 8th grade room. The students are getting very excited!
Midterms will be sent home on Tuesday, May 4th.
