The Bulldog Barks

May 3, 2010

Principal – Mr. Tush

We are ready to send home registration packets for the 2010-11 school year.  If you are planning to register a Kindergarten student for next year, please contact Mollie in the office so that she can get you the proper registration papers. (926-1558)  Please look for these papers the week of May 10th.  Please note the new eleven month payment plan that is now available.

I am now trained, after almost two years on a waiting list, to facilitate VIRTUS training here at St. Mary's and other parishes.  I will be providing a VIRTUS training session this Tuesday, May 4th, from 4:30-6:30 in the Activity Center.  You may register online at virtus.org.  The training is free.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  VIRTUS is a program that trains adults to help prevent the sexual abuse of children.  It is a policy of our Archdiocese that anyone who will work with children of our parish, including chaperoning field trips, must attend training.    There will be many more VIRTUS training sessions in the future if you cannot make it to this one.

Please attend Mass at St. Mary Church this weekend to learn about Campaign 2010.  This is a campaign to strengthen our parish financial situation, directly impacting St. Mary School.

Thanks to all who purchased Reds tickets.  The students are very excited to be able to sing at the Reds game on May 24.

Have a great week!

Kindergarten – Mrs. Denning

Midterm letters for the final grading period will be sent home on Tuesday, May 4.  Make sure to check the purple pocket folder.

In Phonics we will be working with the two sounds for vowel digraph oo- keywords- hook, and tooth.

In math we are doing a unit on symmetrical designs- both sides are the same.  The class will enjoy creating different designs using pattern blocks, and folded paper.

We are down to our last container of disinfecting wipes.  If anyone is willing to donate a container, it would be greatly appreciated.

Grade 1 – Mrs. Hurst

In Phonics this week the students will learn trigraph tch (as in patch) and trigraph dge (as in bridge).  We also will be learning the two sounds of digraph ie (as in pie and shield).  Our sight words this week are: been; cover; though; certain; heard; eye.  We will have two new phonics readers this week.  Make sure your child is using these readers at home for extra reading practice.

Several of the students seem to be running low on pencils.  Please ask your child if he/she needs new pencils for school.

Grade 2 – Mrs. Grove

We liked the achievement test at first. After a few days we got tired of it. We are happy to be back to our normal routine.

Thank you for the ice cream party for the Young Authors participants.

Keep practicing adding 2, three digit numbers with regrouping (carrying) together. Only tons of practice will ever make this automatic!

Grade 3 – Mrs. Rector

Students worked really hard on their ISTEPS last week.  We are glad they are over.  We are back to a normal schedule this week with our spelling pretest on Wednesday and posttest on Friday.  We are also working with Ms. Santiago to complete a short research project on a Spanish speaking country.  Most of the work for this will be done at school.

The first of three book projects is due tomorrow.  Many students have already turned theirs in.  Students should still be reading 20 minutes a night, so completing the other two projects shouldn’t be a problem as long as they don’t wait until the last minute.

Let me know if you are interested in helping with the Pen Pal picnic on Thursday, May 20.  I could use a few people there and a few desserts.  It would be from 11:00 am until 12:30 pm.  Thanks.

Grade 4 – Mrs. Meyer

Now that ISTEP is over, we can continue with our normal schedule.  Thanks to all those who tried their hardest on the tests! Students will have their normal spelling test schedule this week.  Students did a great job on their literature circle projects last week.  We will now be reading a few stories from our reading book again.  There will be a reading test on Friday over Amazing Alice.

Midterm is this Tuesday.  Students should have two book report projects turned in by this date.  Please sign and return midterms as soon as possible.  Also, remember that religion projects are due Friday.  Have a great week!

Grade 5 – Mrs. Baker

I am very proud of how hard the 5th graders worked on their ISTEP tests.  Now that we have finished ISTEP testing, we will have spelling this week as usual.  Our practice test is Wednesday and the final test will be Friday.  We will not have a vocabulary unit this week; we will continue our review.

We are still working in our Literature Circle groups.  Each group will be responsible for a project after we finish reading our books.  More information will come home when this time comes closer.  We are finishing up our social studies chapter this week.  We will go over our study guides on Thursday and the test will be on Tuesday May 11th.  (This date may change.)

Midterms will go home tomorrow.  Please sign and return these as soon as possible.  Have a great week!

Grade 6 – Mrs. Rice

             Midterms went home today.

The Algebra ECA (end of course assessment) for algebra students is Wed. & Thurs, May 26 & 27.  To qualify to take geometry, as freshmen, students must pass this test and 8th grade algebra.  You may opt to repeat algebra as a freshman even though you pass both.

CYO Camp is next Monday and Tuesday.  Information about packing, departure, and returning will be sent home today.

If you have school related pictures, please send them to Mrs. Rice on a disc, flash drive, or email them.  Pictures of field trips, sporting events, sports banquet, academic teams, Young Authors participants, and any school event may be used for the yearbook.  Order forms will be going home in May to reserve a yearbook.  The cost will be $15.00.  Anyone or business still wanting to place an ad in the yearbook may contact Mrs. Rice.

Grade 7 – Mrs. Powell

Students did a great job and worked very hard on their ISTEP testing last week.  Great job to the 5th-8th for selling enough tickets to sing at the Red’s game.  I am sure it will be a great experience!

The 6th grade will have spelling this week, no vocabulary for 7th or 8th.  The 7th grade will be wrapping up short stories and reading from their literature book. In science we are continuing with volcanoes and earthquakes.  Students need to continue working on their project that is due next week.  8th grade is finishing up their poetry projects and will present them in class Thursday.

Next Monday and Tuesday is CYO camp.  Please make sure your child is at school at 7:30 a.m., so we can leave on time. Thank you for your support in making the trip a success!  The 8th grade will also be gone on their trip.

Midterm is Tuesday!

Grade 8 – Mrs. Birkholtz

The students are very excited about the trip!  We will leave at 7:00 next Monday morning, and students and chaperones need to be here no later than 6:45 a.m.  I will give weather updates all week, so students know what to pack!

The 8th graders are doing very well with their periodic table quizzes, and they are working on their social studies projects as well.   The 7th grade is testing over China on Wednesday, and the 6th grade has their South America test on Thursday.  The 6th grade continues to read from the reader and work on their pronouns in language arts.

Thanks to all of the 8th grade parents for their dedicated support in making the class trips a reality for the students.  We could not go without your fundraising efforts and support!
