I hope you had the opportunity to attend Mass at St. Mary Church this past weekend to learn about Campaign 2010.  This is a campaign to strengthen our parish financial situation for the future, directly impacting St. Mary School.

Please join me in wishing our 6th and 7th graders a great trip to CYO camp and our 8th graders a fantastic 8th grade trip to South Carolina.

Have a great week!

Kindergarten – Mrs. Denning

In phonics this week we will be working with long vowels, and a new vowel rule. We will learn about "sneaky e"- sneaky e is silent, and sneaks by a consonant, and "scares" the vowel to make it say its long vowel sound.  When a vowel has a consonant and a "sneaky e" after it, it is long and we code it with a macron.  Our words to help us remember the rule are: cake, dime,  hose, cube, concrete. Word lists will come home for practice.

Reader # 13 went home last week.  The class noticed that the sentences in the reader were getting a lot longer.  They did a very good job reading the words.  I hope they read the story to you.

In math we will be making graphs, and working with story problems to make number sentences for addition and subtraction.

Please practice reading the high-frequency words, that were listed in the midterm letter, on a regular basis.  That way the children will be well prepared when it comes time for individual evaluations.

Grade 1 – Mrs. Hurst

In Phonics this week we will learn final, stable syllables -sion (as in television and mission) and -ture (as in picture).  We also will learn the two sounds of digraph ch (as in school and chef) and that combination wh is pronounced "hw," not "w."  Our sight words this week are: brother, chocolate, stomach, clothes, don't.

New book order forms go home today.  These will be the last orders to be sent out this school year.  Please have your order returned by Friday, May 21st.

Grade 2 – Mrs. Grove

The second grade has started practicing to do the readings at the school Mass on Wednesday, May 19.

Now that we can receive Communion, Mass seems more meaningful.

Keep practicing adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers with regrouping. We also could use a lot more practice telling time to the minute.

Grade 3 – Mrs. Rector

The third graders did an awesome job on their first book projects.  Remember there are two more due by June 7.  They can bring them in and present them any time the project is ready, they don’t have to wait for a certain date.  Just don’t wait until the last minute.

We are going to the Lion’s Club building this Friday, May 14, to see a performance of “Patchwork” sponsored by the Aurora Public Library District.  It is a play based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s series “Little House on the Prairie”.  Thank you to the library for sponsoring this performance in honor of Children’s Book Week.

Grade 4 – Mrs. Meyer

Students have been learning a lot about different types of rocks and all the properties of minerals, like color, hardness, and luster.  We will finish the chapter today with the rock cycle, and students will get a study guide for their test which is this Thursday, May 13.

I can’t wait to read the students’ cause and effect essays.  Just from our brainstorming time, I can tell that there are going to be some very creative stories.  Students have been doing a great job multiplying two-digit numbers, like 45x34.  Please continue to practice.

Scholastic book orders are due Wednesday, May 12.  Have a good week!

Grade 5 – Mrs. Baker

The last book order for the year went home on Friday.  Please return these to school by Thursday May 13.  If you need a new book order just let me know.

We have been studying for our social studies test which is tomorrow.  We played a review game in class today.  Students have had their study guides since last Thursday, they know this material, and hopefully it will show on their tests!

We have been learning about the solar system in science and are getting ready to start a big project over some of the planets.  Information about this project will come home this week.  Students will be working in groups here at school.  Most, but not all, of the work will be done here at school.

Please return any midterms that you may still have!  Have a great week!

Grade 6 – Mrs. Rice

The 6th & 7th graders are at CYO camp today and tomorrow.  Grades 3-6 are going to a play at the Lion’s Building Friday afternoon.  It’s entitled, “Patchwork”.  We are studying minerals in science for the next few weeks.

Grade 7 – Mrs. Powell

Greetings from CYO Camp!!  The 7th grade volcano projects are due Friday!!

Have a great week!

Grade 8 – Mrs. Birkholtz

Greetings from the bus on our way to Charleston!
