Principal – Mr. Tush

Packets for the 2010-11 school year were sent home last Tuesday.  Please return your completed applications as soon as possible. (This helps with planning for next year.) Also, remember that financial aid is available to all St. Mary parishioners who need it.  If you are planning to register a Kindergarten student for next year, please contact Mollie in the office so that she can get you the proper registration papers (926-1558). Please note the new eleven month payment plan that is now available.

Our 8th Grade Graduation will be Wednesday, May 26th at 7:00 p.m.

Please remember that you can stay up to date on all of St. Mary’s events at mystmarys.com.

Have a great week!

Kindergarten – Mrs. Denning

We're working on a new digraph this week-ch- keyword-cheese.  We will also work with combination ar- keyword- arm.  (A combination is two letters that come together and make an unexpected sound.)  We will get our 14th reader, "Tim's Bike".  Please make sure to read this with your child.

In math we will review measuring with rulers, and do addition/subtraction story problems.

We are doing a lot of handwriting practice, both letters and numbers.  Help at home would be appreciated.  When practicing at home, please make sure your child forms the letters and numbers correctly, and uses the guidelines.

Grade 1 – Mrs. Hurst

In Phonics this week we will learn the sound of quadrigraph eigh (as in sleigh), and that the letter a can make a short /o/ sound (as in wallet).  We will also learn the meaning and sound of prefix -un.  Our sight words this week are: bought; fought, thought, whose, buy, taste.

May book orders are due this Friday.  This will be the last order for this school year. Don't forget to order books for summer reading!

Grade 2 – Mrs. Grove

Congratulations Zach Ruter for winning the Christian Spirit Award for the third quarter!

We host the Mass next Wednesday, May 19 at 8:30am. Matt, Zach, William, Lydia, Alyssa, Mitch, Jonathan, and Megan all have speaking parts. Join us if you like.

Grade 3 – Mrs. Rector

We are very excited about our Pen Pal picnic this Thursday.  All students need to bring in a packed lunch and a drink.   We will eat lunch in the Activity Center.  Thanks to those who said they would send in a dessert.  We will also be decorating cookies with someone from the Kroger bakery with our pen pals. Thanks also to Shannon Perry who is coming in to help out.

Book orders are due this Friday, May 21.  This is the final order for the year.  There are lots of good choices for summer reading in the book orders.  Speaking of books, students are reminded daily that they have two more book projects due by June 7.

Grade 4 – Mrs. Meyer

Students are excited to be starting a new round of literature circle groups.  This time there will be 6 groups with 3 students in each. As they read each chapter, they will be writing a summary and drawing a picture.  We will then put all the summaries together to make a chapter review book.

In Indiana History, students will be learning about the Civil War and what part Indiana played in the war and with slavery.  Today students learned about our upcoming wax museum. Basically, each student will choose one famous Hoosier, research him/her, and prepare a monologue.  They will then dress up as their Hoosier and say their monologue when our museum is open.  Families will be invited to our museum.  I hope everyone has a great week!

Grade 5 – Mrs. Baker

We have started studying the American Revolution in social studies.  The fifth graders are very excited to learn about the Boston Tea Party, the Boston Massacre, and the Revolutionary War.  We have also completed our chapter in science over the solar system.  We will have a test on Tuesday over this chapter and will be working on our projects this week.  Study guides for the test went home on Friday!

We are finishing up our literature circles this week.  Each group will have a short test later this week.  Students have done a great job working together in their groups.  I am very proud of them!

Just a reminder that the last book orders for the year went home Friday May 7, please return any orders that you want this week.  Have a wonderful week!

Grade 6 – Mrs. Rice

The 6th & 7th grade had a great time at CYO Camp.  They did a lot of team building activities, experienced the Underground Railroad, learned fire building skills, and experienced high ropes.  Everyone gained from their experiences.  Thank you to Mr. Hill, Mr. Levi, and Mrs. Carpenter for going with us.  We couldn’t have gone without you!

The Algebra ECA has been moved up one day to May 25 & 26.  We will review all this week!

The 6th grade is continuing their study of minerals in science.

Grade 7 – Mrs. Powell

We are into the final month of school with lots left to do.  We will have Unit 15 vocabulary this week in all grades.  In science, the 7th grade will have a test over earthquakes and volcanoes. They did an excellent job on their projects!  The 7th grade is reading The Diary of Anne Frank (play version) and the 8th grade is reading Fairy Tales with a newspaper project to follow.  Both grades will be working on writing activities this week for English.

Thank you to our chaperones for attending CYO Camp with us!! We appreciate your help.  Reminder:  Red’s game is next Monday, May 24th.  The students need to be at school no later than 4:45.

Have a great week!

Grade 8 – Mrs. Birkholtz

Our trip was a great success!  Now, we have to face the month ahead of us to finish out all of our studies!  The 8th graders continue to work on their periodic table in science, and they are finishing up their social studies project.  The 7th graders are finishing their project on China, and the 6th grade is moving on to the United Kingdom.   In language arts, the 6th grade is continuing to read from the reader, and we continue to work with pronouns.

Even though the weather is warm, we do have three weeks to go, and students need to continue to focus on their academics!

Vacation Bible School – Mrs. Meyer

VBS begins June 21, 2010.  If you would be willing to help get supplies together and/or help set up the activity center, please call Carolyn Meyer at 926-0060.  We hope to make this a fun filled time of learning for the youth of our parish, but we can’t do it without you.

BoxTops – Cathy Hill

I will be meeting my BoxTop buddies for the last time and wrapping up this fundraiser, on Thursday May 20. Please send in any coupons you may still have. The 2nd check was received from General Mills in the amount of $335.70, bringing the total BoxTop submissions brought in this school year to $1078.70, which means 10,787 coupons were turned in!! The winning grade (TBA) will be treated to a pizza party at the teacher's discretion. Remember that the student, who brought in the most 10c coupons for the year, will be rewarded at the awards ceremony on the last day of school.

Thank you to all who painstakingly cut coupons to support this simple fundraiser. Clearly every little coupon counts. Keep clipping!
